Within the Glossary, terms in quotation marks are explained elsewhere in the glossary and contextual links lead you to other Pegasus Library pages.
Bridge: Shared "Catalog" of "Carleton" and "St. Olaf". [
Link Out: Carleton]
Carleton: A stellar college with an amazing library.
Catalog: This is searchable information about things the library owns or rents. You'll find information about
books,
periodicals (not the articles inside the periodicals... for that you need a
Database), music, movies, etc. Carleton's library catalog is called "Bridge" [
Link Out], which shows the "Holdings" of both "Carleton" and "St. Olaf". You can also search "WorldCat" [
Link Out] for information about things other libraries own and then have those things sent here by requesting them via "InterLibrary Loan" [
Link Out].
Database: In the library world, this is what we call the searchable information on
journal articles, book reviews, and other small pieces of published works. We say that databases index articles because they act like the indexes at the backs of books; they tell us where to find the articles we're looking for. Some databases may have the "Full Text" of the article or review to which they refer, while others may provide only the citation and abstract of the works they index. If there's no full text available, don't despair. See
Finding Articles for more information.
Full Text: When you have all the words of the article available to you rather than just the citation information.
Holdings: Things the library owns or rents. You can find all our holdings by searching our "Catalog."
InterLibrary Loan: You can have books and articles sent to you from other libraries, free of charge, by submitting a
loan request. Make sure we don't have the
book or
article here or at "St. Olaf," though, or your request will get returned to you.
St. Olaf: That college on the other side of the river... you know the one (
Link Out: St. Olaf).
WorldCat: A "Catalog" that searches many library's "Holdings" from all over the nation and the world. [
Link Out: WorldCat]
